Geophagus are generally peaceful and coexist well with other similar-sized, non-aggressive fish. All geophagus are 'earth-eaters' meaning they spend their time sifting through the ground foraging, this means having a sand or fine substrate is crucial for their wellbeing as they can be prone to blockages if the substrate is too coarse
