Nicaragua Cichlids are relatively peaceful for a central American cichlid of this size, but they are still territorial and should be kept with robust tankmates (if kept with other cichlids you will need a larger tank). Other possible tankmates include larger barbs and catfish. Ideally keep these fish on a fine gravel or sand substrate as they do like to dig, especially when breeding.
Obtaining a pair can be challenging as they can become aggressive towards one another. The best way is to start with a group of young fish and allow them to pair off naturally.
